Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant

With declining rainfall, Water Corporation wanted to establish a new desalination plant to provide a secure, climate-resilient source of drinking water for Western Australia¡¯s growing population. They initially brought us in coordinate the approvals strategy and determine if the development could meet environmental objectives.

We prepared the environmental gap analysis, outlining the key technical environmental data needed to support the development of the public environmental review We also coordinated the public environmental review process. Our supporting documents included technical risk assessments (satisfying state and federal legislation), the construction environmental management framework, and a biodiversity offset plan.

While the effort required a quick turnaround, we delivered it within Water Corporation¡¯s eight-week timeframe¡ªhelping to inform the next stages in the process. They then engaged us as part of the design team to lead the balance of the plant¡¯s alliance development (AD) phase.

Our services included leading the onshore multidisciplinary design works, building structures and building services, electrical, instrumentation and controls, energy and renewables, and site services. We were also responsible for marine processes¡ªincluding diffuser design, derivation of oceanographic design criteria, and dispersion investigations)¡ªand providing input to the marine structures and tunnel design. Additionally, we provided design management, project controls, and digital model management for the overall balance of plant design team. A separate review team, formed by individuals not part of the design team, performed a third-party independent review for the mechanical design scope.

Located approximately 40 kilometres north of Perth, the Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plan (ASDP) will provide an additional source of drinking water to supplement the existing metropolitan water supply. The plant will be completed by 2028.
