Stantec acquires Cosgroves, a leading Aotearoa New Zealand buildings engineering firm

Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, has acquired , a 90-person buildings engineering firm headquartered in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Cosgroves is an industry-leading firm known for technical excellence with public and private sector clients. The addition of Cosgroves will expand Âé¶¹´«Ã½¡¯s buildings engineering capabilities in New Zealand, particularly in fire engineering, electrical, mechanical, hydraulics, buildings sustainability, and civil Âé¶¹´«Ã½. The expanded capabilities will support Âé¶¹´«Ã½¡¯s growth in healthcare, advanced manufacturing, and mission critical/data centres¡ªall global business priorities.

The acquisition will increase Âé¶¹´«Ã½¡¯s market presence in New Zealand by approximately 10%, to more than 900 staff.

The New Zealand market is poised for significant opportunities in both the public and private sectors. Increased public funding in healthcare in the next decade will require strong technical teams with local foundations and international experience to deliver projects that meet community challenges. As demand in the mission critical sector intensifies, the combined Cosgroves and Âé¶¹´«Ã½ team will be well positioned to increase market share across New Zealand, and in Australia.

A growth trajectory in New Zealand
Stantec has experienced strong business performance and growth in New Zealand within the water, transportation, and government sectors. The firm has expanded its regional footprint with the successful acquisitions of Cardno, Traffic Design Group (TDG), and MWH.

Cosgroves will also enhance Âé¶¹´«Ã½¡¯s buildings engineering services in Australia¡ªbringing added depth and flexibility to the team. Combined with the 2019 acquisition of Australian buildings engineering firm Wood & Grieve Engineers, Âé¶¹´«Ã½ will now have a collective presence of more than 2,800 staff across Australia and New Zealand.

Cosgroves project experience
Cosgroves¡¯ award-winning portfolio of consulting engineering experience is specialised in fire, electrical, mechanical, hydraulics, sustainability, and civil. Standout projects include

  • Christchurch Town Hall Redevelopment¡ªdelivered a repair and refurbishment project for the Christchurch City Council following earthquakes in 2010 and 2011. Electrical building services included installing concealed cables within new and existing structures to minimise the impact on the heritage-listed building.
  • Rutherford Regional Science and Innovation Centre (RRSIC)¡ªthe RRSIC was commissioned to be a world-class facility for science teaching and research at the University of Canterbury. Cosgroves worked closely with Âé¶¹´«Ã½ and other partners to provide mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, ancillary electrical, vertical transportation and environmentally sustainable design services on a complex tertiary laboratory building.
  • Invercargill Central¡ªthe Invercargill Central redevelopment aims to breathe life back into Invercargill¡¯s central business district with a large hub centred around food, hospitality, entertainment, and retail. The project aims to maintain, integrate, and preserve the three heritage building fa?ades that surround the development.?Cosgroves is providing multiple buildings services for the project.
  • Manukau Health Park¡ªone of the largest health projects in construction across New Zealand, this redevelopment will take pressure off other facilities in Auckland and improve access to healthcare services. Cosgroves provided the full range of building services for the new buildings and internal refurbishments.
  • Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) Outpatients Building¡ªprovided fire engineering and design services for the CDHB Outpatients Building, a complex healthcare facility. The facility provides integrated spaces for the delivery of outpatient services and a range of clinical services.
  • The Court Theatre¡ªthe new development of The Court Theatre, New Zealand¡¯s largest production theatre, returned to the Christchurch Central Business District following its temporary relocation after the 2011 earthquakes. The Cosgroves team delivered a complex and coordinated build, including the full suite of building services, civil and fire engineering design services.
