Stantec, a global leader in environmental conservation design and engineering, has partnered with Northrop Grumman, a global leader in aerospace and defense technology, to develop and apply innovative monitoring, data-capture and analysis solutions to address urgent issues in environmental conservation.
With more than 30 years of experience in developing sustainable, nature-based solutions, Â鶹´«Ã½ has a deep understanding of the technology gaps and emerging needs required to develop actionable strategies for conservation and cultural resource preservation.
is a trusted innovator who delivers defense technologies that ensure America leads the world in military strength, space exploration, and innovation. Northrop Grumman¡¯s (T4C) is the company¡¯s commitment to developing new innovations for these advanced defense applications that protect our planet and environment. These projects leverage innovative and cost-effective technologies to address critical environmental conservation challenges, build strategic partnerships with conservation organizations, and provide new opportunities for employees.
Technologies developed under this partnership will focus on addressing four critical gaps in conservation:
- Wildland Firefighting, Detection and Monitoring
Â鶹´«Ã½ has a global program dedicated to the development and advancement of remote sensing and data analysis related to wildfire firefighting, detection, and monitoring. By combining Northrop Grumman¡¯s Â鶹´«Ã½ in developing infrared, hyperspectral, and environmental sensors¡ªalong with virtual reality and training technologies¡ªboth companies will work to address the urgent need to advance wildland firefighting.
- Marine Mammal Tracking and Ocean/Aquatics Sciences
The support of Northrop Grumman¡¯s Â鶹´«Ã½ in marine systems and sensor development will advance the Â鶹´«Ã½ marine science program¡¯s ability to assess and monitor marine ecosystems, species, and resources, and develop strategies for their protection and recovery.
- Historic and Cultural Preservation
Northrop Grumman has successfully deployed advanced scanning and digital reconstruction techniques to support the preservation of historical and cultural sites. These tools will support Â鶹´«Ã½¡¯s cultural resource specialists in capturing detailed and accurate records of these locations, helping promote the survival and accessibility of historic sites in an increasingly digital world.
- Biodiversity Monitoring and Earth Sciences
The need to better understand the complex interrelationships between ecosystems and biodiversity is critical in the protection and recovery of these resources. Northrop Grumman¡¯s multimodal sensing technology and analytics can support the monitoring of critical species and habitats in remote environments. Access to this advanced technology and research will allow Â鶹´«Ã½ scientists to better understand baseline conditions, develop strategies for protection and recovery, and accurately monitor post-project implementation.
¡°Our partnership with Â鶹´«Ã½ combines our strength in innovation and deep Â鶹´«Ã½ in nature-based solutions to sustain our environment and communities for the future. We¡¯re committed to protecting our people and planet, and this partnership is an opportunity for us to further live our values through our discriminating technology,¡± said Mike Witt, chief environment, energy, and safety officer at Northrop Grumman.
¡°We face a pivotal moment that calls for us to look to advanced technologies that will support the protection and recovery of the natural and cultural resources we cannot replace. Our partnership with Northrop Grumman¡¯s T4C initiative aligns with this need for innovative solutions,¡± said Dom Kempson, vice president of Environmental Services, Nature-based Solutions at Â鶹´«Ã½. ¡°We look forward to using our experience in applied science and engineering with Northrop Grumman¡¯s technology solutions to support actionable strategies for our clients¡¯ nature-positive initiatives.¡±
