Stantec providing engineering designs for new green hydrogen test center in Aberdeen, Scotland

Once built, the facility will be the first of its kind in the UK, able to uncover crucial data to support the rollout of the clean fuel

06/23/2025 LONDON, UK TSX, NYSE:STN

Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, has been appointed to carry out Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) study for a new Green Hydrogen Test and Demonstration Facility in Aberdeen¡¯s Energy Transition Zone (ETZ). Â鶹´«Ã½ was awarded the contract by ETZ Ltd, a private sector-led, not-for-profit company with the goal of repositioning the north-east of Scotland as the net zero energy capital of Europe.

Stantec is now providing engineering design for the new multimillion-pound test center, which aims to shape the future of green hydrogen production in the United Kingdom (UK). The facility will be unique in the country and used for the testing and verification of key components needed for producing green hydrogen at scale, including electrolyzers, flowmeters, valves, and integrated systems. The research and testing conducted will be key to supporting the safety and long-term reliability of hydrogen in situ.

Leveraging deep sector Â鶹´«Ã½
Stantec¡¯s role involves its multidisciplinary teams of engineers and technical specialists carrying out a range of work programs. These include project management; process; process safety; mechanical, civil, structural, and electrical engineering; as well as control, instrumentation, and procurement services.

German multinational will operate the site within the Energy Transition Zone in Aberdeen, which is expected to open in 2027. This will be one of its foremost facilities globally for the advancement of technologies critical to the emerging hydrogen economy. The appointment of T?V S?D and Â鶹´«Ã½ marks a key milestone towards a final investment decision later this year and the start of construction in 2026.

Green hydrogen is a low-carbon fuel, derived from water and renewable electricity, which has the potential to decarbonize sectors including industry, power, transport, and heat. The UK Government is seeking to develop at least 5 gigawatts of installed production capacity by 2030.?

ETZ Ltd and T?V S?D are developing collaborative models to attract hydrogen project developers, original equipment manufacturers, and other interested industry parties to part-fund the open-access test facilities, which will operate similar to the National Floating Offshore Wind Innovation Centre, which opened in the Energy Transition Zone in 2024.

Current activity to attract private sector investment to match public sector funding is ongoing, whilst the engineering design continues. The project will benefit from green hydrogen available from the Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub, which is being developed by Aberdeen City Council and BP, which also sits in the Energy Transition Zone.

Moving forward with the right partners
¡°This facility will be a nationally significant asset for the UK and as an exemplar for the testing, verification, and certification of key industry hydrogen technologies,¡± said Martin McCormack, ETZ Ltd director for Hydrogen and CCUS. ¡°In T?V S?D, we have found the right partner to help deliver this test and demonstration center, ably supported by Â鶹´«Ã½¡¯s deep technical Â鶹´«Ã½. As we seek to drive forward the hydrogen economy in the region, this is a prime opportunity for the wider hydrogen sector to support the development of this key infrastructure. This project will be a genuine UK first, and we hope it enables further investment into hydrogen production in North East Scotland and beyond.¡±

Stantec has extensive experience in developing green, blue, and turquoise hydrogen facilities across the UK and globally. The firm has worked in the production of hydrogen and in its utilization across multiple sectors, from combustion to glass manufacturing and the distilling processes.?

¡°This is an exciting and expanding sector, and the work being delivered here is a prime opportunity to explore the material benefits green hydrogen can deliver,¡± said Jonathan Maclaren, generation director for Energy and Resources at Â鶹´«Ã½. ¡°We are always proud to play our role in delivering innovative projects that pave the way for more sustainable and resilient communities. This front-end engineering design award is an exciting step for Â鶹´«Ã½ and ETZ Ltd in our commitments to Scotland and supporting net zero.¡±

Supporting Aberdeen¡¯s legacy
¡°Aberdeen¡¯s legacy as a major energy hub, coupled with its track record in developing the hydrogen economy, makes a natural fit for T?V S?D to join this project,¡± said Dr. Martin Hanton, Green Energy & Sustainability director, T?V S?D Northern Europe. ¡°Our specialism in reducing risk to people, assets, and environment also marries closely with the city¡¯s HSE legacy in oil and gas as we develop new energy systems. We look forward to working with ETZ Ltd to drive forward industrial green hydrogen and the energy transition.¡±
