Born in the historic Chuquicamata mining camp, Marcela’s connection to mining is deeply personal. Today, mining provides a space where she can combine her passion for engineering with her commitment to sustainability, working toward a more conscious, innovative, and environmentally respectful industry.
As a chemical civil engineer with experience in comprehensive mine closure management, Marcela’s served as project coordinator, technical reviewer, and a deliverables developer. She also promotes international mine closure standards within the Chilean mining industry.
Looking to advance gender equity in the mining industry, Marcela participates in Women in Mining, Chile, Network of Women Engineers in Mining (RIM), and Women in Tailings. These organizations promote various initiatives to increase female participation in the sector. Additionally, Marcela teaches in a diploma program for responsible mining, aiming to convey the importance of a more conscious and environmentally committed mining industry.
Away from her work as a senior mine closure engineer, Marcela loves dance and practices at an academy. She also enjoys spending time with her family—she has two young children—and they’re always planning fun activities together.
