Chatham to Lakeshore Transmission Line

As the population of Southern Ontario grows, so does the need for electricity. To accommodate future growth, improve reliability, and support local industries the Independent Electricity System Operator of Ontario (IESO) directed Hydro One, Ontario¡¯s largest electricity transmission and distribution provider, to develop and construct the Chatham to Lakeshore Transmission line. Our transmission team worked as the engineering and environmental subcontractor to Voltage Power, the project¡¯s engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor.

The project included an early contractor involvement (ECI) stage, in which our team provided a 30 percent optimized and innovative design that led to the award of the detailed phase of the project under an EPC model. During the EPC stage, we completed the detailed line design all through to construction. This included the tower design requirement, overhead design, and hardware design. We also worked with other vendors such as tower manufacturers, foundation contractors, and material suppliers. Additionally, our team provided environmental and geotechnical services to support the overall project as well as procurement and cost estimating services for the structures, hardware, conductor, and cables.

The resulting double-circuit 230-kilovolt transmission line between Chatham Switching Station and Lakeshore Switching Station increases the power transmission capacity to approximately 1,500 megawatts. The project is part of a network of projects across Southern Ontario that will support increased stability and enable growth potential to businesses and residents of the province.
