Montgomery Creek Floodplain Restoration

The City of Kitchener wanted to enhance Montgomery Creek¡¯s ecological health and improve community spaces around it. With funding through the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund (DMAF), the City engaged us to help with a floodplain restoration effort.

Our team led the design, permitting, tendering processes, construction observation, and contract administration services for this creek restoration project. We sought to implement enhancements to the floodplain and stream habitat using natural channel design principles. The focus of our work included restoring the creek's natural shape, mitigating erosion risk, and reforesting the banks.

We also provided construction observation for the development of community spaces along the creek. This consisted of constructing walking trails, creating lookout areas, and establishing picnic spots to provide pedestrian access to the creek. Additionally, the project involved the replacement of an existing pedestrian crossing, protection of current infrastructure, and planning for future road culvert expansion.

Now, through this floodplain restoration effort, Montgomery Creek¡¯s revitalized floodplain can better withstand the forces of erosion. And being more accessible to the community, it provides a welcoming place where nature and people can come together.
