Sizewell C - Design Modification Assessment

Following our successful design modification review for the Hinkley Point C (HPC) nuclear power station design, our client set out to replicate the design for Sizewell C (SZC). They engaged us to assess whether the proposed modifications were significant from an environmental permitting compliance perspective.

We examined whether they could have an impact on discharges, requiring an increase in the discharge limits in the operational environmental permits, or whether the changes could significantly reduce discharge limit margins. We also considered whether a revised best available techniques analysis would be necessary.

Our team conducted independent assessments of the modifications to HPC to verify whether any of the modifications could have an impact on the three SZC operational environmental permits¡ªthe radiological substances regulation activity, combustion, and water discharge.

Our assessment took into consideration advice from a radioactive waste advisor on the environmental significance of modifications. We organized workshops and developed a screening process to assess the modifications. We worked with the SZC environment team who provided us with the relevant screening forms to support the review of the impact of the modifications. We also developed a spreadsheet to manage these modifications during the review.

Additionally, we assessed various proposed modifications and determined that some would impact discharge limits, others required more information, and a final group would have no effect. Ultimately, this assessment provided the client with necessary information to justify the proposed modifications to deliver the SZC design.?
