Blaine Wetland Sanctuary Development Master Plan

The Blaine Wetland Sanctuary provides access to unique natural systems via boardwalks and trails, while also preserving a critical ecosystem. The City of Blaine engaged us as part of the team to develop a master plan that would celebrate this unique remnant of the Anoka Sand Plain ecosystem. They wanted the team to gather existing information and develop conceptual alternatives for a site wide park and nature center.

Working alongside Critical Connections Ecological Services, our team led the development of a phased master plan for the 511-acre (206-hectare) site. The plant integrates 3.2 miles (5.1 kilometres) of developed trails, 4.5 miles (7.2 kilometres) of soft surface paths, two open water features, and a future interpretive center.

Using topographic, vegetative, and hydrologic mapping, we evaluated trail alignments and facility locations to reduce ecological disruption while enhancing visitor experience. The plan took shape through collaboration with the Blaine Natural Resources Conservation Board and City officials. We provided full design and construction administration services for each of the six phases of development.

Visitors began accessing and enjoying the site after completion of the first phase, which included parking lot, trails, and a boardwalk across the northern part of the site. As remaining phases were completed, the sanctuary evolved into a unique destination for education, recreation, and conservation, offering residents and visitors a deeper connection to Minnesota¡¯s native landscapes.
