University of North Texas at Dallas - College of Law Building Updates
The University of North Texas at Dallas (UNT Dallas) College of Law is the only public law school in the Dallas metropolitan area. Created as a ¡°people¡¯s law school,¡± it focuses on serving the legal needs of surrounding communities and providing an educational opportunity for non-traditional law students. UNT Dallas wanted a historic building to house this historic program. They reached out to our team to help them preserve and update the Dallas Municipal Building to meet the academic needs of the program.
Originally constructed in 1914 as the city¡¯s fourth city hall, the Dallas Municipal Building is best known as the location of the arrest, jailing, and eventual assassination of Lee Harvey Oswald in 1963. The six-story Beaux-Art structure, designed by architect C.D. Hill, is both a National Historic Landmark and a Texas Historic Landmark.
Creating spaces appropriate for this unique law school within a historically significant building not designed for such a purpose served as both the key challenge and opportunity of the project. We blended the historic restoration of the main public spaces and preservation of Oswald related areas with creative adaptation of less significant spaces into law school instructional and administrative spaces.
Today, the UNT Dallas College of Law¡¯s programs and facilities reflect a dedication to training lawyers that are practice-ready, supporting a learning-by-doing pedagogy while also preserving a crucial part of US history.

Architecture is creating functional, inclusive, and beautiful environments, but in the end, designs impact students most¡ªso they come first.
