Lochay Power Station Refurbishment
SSE Renewables is investing ?70 million over a three-year period to repower Lochay Power Station in Perthshire. This will extend its operational life by at least another 40 years with modern, efficient turbine technology.
Following work we¡¯d done with SSE on Tummel Station, they approached us to carry out stability assessments on the 1950s station. The significant refurbishment programme aims to replace all main generation components inside Lochay, increasing installed capacity and removing pressure relief valves, while retaining the existing building and civil infrastructure, optimising the site.
After the initial stability assessment and generator plinth analysis, our role expanded to provide civil, structural, and geotechnical design services for the upgrade. Overhauling the old mechanical and electrical equipment creates complicated civil and structural interfaces throughout the power station. We prepared civil detailed design drawings and assisted with civil interfacing, coordinating with contractors, integrating their models into a global 3D model of the site, and aligning various equipment and structures. This was crucial for anticipating challenges around exact load and its application at interface points, dealing with third parties on separate contracts, and supporting smooth communication.
With the key enabling works completed, SSE plans to begin the main construction works and are working with our local offices and Scotland¡¯s regional supply chain, helping sustain and create local jobs in the Highlands for the duration of the works.
