Uddevalla Tyre Recycling Plant
The number of tyres that are discarded when they reach end of life is growing, reaching over 3.5 million tons a year in Europe alone. In a bid to tackle the issue, Infiniteria¡ªa joint venture between Antin Infrastructure Partners and Enviro Systems (Enviro)¡ªis building the world¡¯s first large-scale tyre recycling plant based on Enviro pyrolysis technology.
By heating tyre chips to high temperatures in the absence of oxygen, this technology allows the extraction of carbon black and oil from old tyres. This process can reduce waste and create a circular economy enabling customers in the tyre, rubber, and oil industries to buy back and reuse recovered products instead of using virgin fossil fuels.
We provided design and funding application support to the client covering plans for the first site in Uddevalla and six further pyrolysis facilities across Europe. Our role included independent design advisory, design assurance, and ongoing construction technical assurance support. We also provided the calculations on greenhouse gas avoidance to support the EU Innovate Funding application.
Currently under construction, the plant will have an initial recycling capacity for 34,500 tons of tyres and estimated greenhouse gas avoidance over 10 years that¡¯s equivalent to the annual energy consumption of over 2 million homes. This pioneering Uddevalla facility aims to act as gateway to additional factories, facilitating a rapid rollout of the technology and powerful new tool to recycle tires.?
